How to calculate barber commission, with worked examples

How to calculate barber commission in Malaysia. Commission-only, base plus commission, product commission and chair rental, with worked ringgit examples and the minimum wage rule.

Short answer: Barber commission = commission base × commission rate. The base is usually the barber's service sales for the period, either before or after discounts. Commission-only barbers in Malaysia commonly earn 40–60% of service sales. Barbers on a basic salary usually earn 20–35%, often only above a sales target. Products such as pomade often get a separate, lower rate.

Percentages are common ranges from Malaysian salon-industry sources. They are not legal advice. Check your own employment contracts with an accountant.

What are the common ways to pay barbers?

Model How it works Suits
Commission only Barber gets a % of the service sales they bring in Busy shops, experienced barbers
Basic + commission Fixed salary plus a lower % New barbers, quieter shops
Basic + commission above target Commission only on sales above a target Shops that want a steady base
Chair (booth) rental Barber pays the shop rent and keeps their own takings Self-employed barbers

Example 1: Commission only

A barber does RM6,000 in services this month, and the commission rate is 50%.

RM6,000 × 50% = RM3,000

Example 2: Basic salary plus commission above a target

  • Basic salary: RM1,700
  • Commission: 30% on service sales above RM4,000
  • Service sales this month: RM6,000

Sales above the target: RM6,000 − RM4,000 = RM2,000 Commission: RM2,000 × 30% = RM600 Total: RM1,700 + RM600 = RM2,300

Example 3: Discounts. Full price or what the customer paid?

A RM40 cut is sold at 20% off for RM32, and the commission rate is 50%.

  • On full price: RM40 × 50% = RM20
  • On the discounted price: RM32 × 50% = RM16

Neither is wrong. Choose one, put it in the contract, and use it every time. Most disputes about commission start with discounts and free loyalty cuts.

Example 4: Product commission

The barber sells RM300 of pomade and hair tonic, and the product commission rate is 10%.

RM300 × 10% = RM30

Add this to the service commission.

How does minimum wage affect commission pay?

  • Malaysia's minimum wage is RM1,700 a month for employees.
  • The exemption for employers with fewer than five staff ended on 31 July 2025.
  • If an employed barber is paid on commission only and has a slow month, the shop must top up to the minimum.
  • Budget 2027 (announced 9 October 2026) raises the minimum wage to RM2,000 from June 2027. Smaller businesses get an exemption, but its length has not been confirmed yet.

Chair-rental barbers who are truly self-employed are not your employees. But the name on the arrangement does not decide that. If you set their hours and prices, they may count as employees.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Counting commission by hand after closing. This causes errors and arguments. Record which barber did each sale at the time of the sale.
  • No written rule for discounts and free loyalty cuts.
  • Mixing up chair-rental barbers with commissioned barbers in the same pay calculation.
  • Forgetting EPF, SOCSO and EIS on the wages and commission you pay employees.

How Meikigo handles commission

In Meikigo, every sale is tied to the barber who did it. Commission is worked out for you:

  • One service commission rate and one product commission rate per outlet
  • Choose which services and products earn commission
  • Choose whether commission is based on the full price or the discounted price
  • Manual adjustment on a sale for special cases
  • Chair-rental barbers are left out of commission
  • A commission-by-barber report for the pay period

Meikigo uses one rate per outlet. It does not yet set different rates for different barbers, fixed amounts per service, or tiered rates. If your shop pays each barber a different percentage, keep that part in a spreadsheet for now. Commission reporting is on Starter and above. Payroll and payslips are Pro only.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal barber commission percentage in Malaysia?

Commission-only barbers commonly earn about 40–60% of the service revenue they generate. Barbers on a basic salary usually get a lower commission of about 20–35%, often only on sales above a target.

Should commission be calculated before or after discounts?

Decide and write it down. Calculating on the discounted price, which is what the customer actually paid, protects the shop when promotions run. Calculating on the full price protects barbers from discounts they didn't choose.

Do barbers get commission on products?

Many shops pay a separate, lower commission on products such as pomade, often 5–15%, to encourage barbers to recommend them.

Does minimum wage apply to commission-only barbers in Malaysia?

Employees are covered by the minimum wage of RM1,700 a month. The exemption for employers with fewer than five staff ended on 31 July 2025. If an employed barber's commission falls short in a slow month, the shop must top up to the minimum. Chair-rental barbers who are self-employed are a different arrangement. Check with an accountant or JTK for your case.
